VyprVPN has been around since 2009, and as mentioned, things move fast in the world of tech. The fact that they have remained competitive, innovative and flexible against the newer entrants is impressive.
So why is VyprVPN so underrated against the big three? Ultimately, most VPNs today share similar technologies and service providers and are based in pro-privacy and personal information territories, all with similar server locations – so what should one look for then?
Now, not to get all ‘business’ on you, but it’s necessary to understand how challenging it can be for larger and older businesses to continuously reinvent themselves – and this is important as it comes down to both their internal DNA and the product you will use for the next few years and is precisely why VyprVPN is a great long term option.
It has a competitive pricing structure and includes a 36-month plan at a highly competitive rate – but we will touch upon that later.
VyprVPN also excels in the world of censorship, has excellent security and provides decent speeds, unblocks most content.
Furthermore, they have implemented the Wireguard protocol, the very same protocol the top tier VPN providers use.
So let’s show our cards and see if VyprVPN comes out on top.
- Public wifi Protection
- Kill Switch at multiple levels with Automatic Reconnect
- Multiple Protocol Selections including; Chameleon, WireGuard, OpenVPN and L2TP/IPSec
- Automatic Port Selection
- DNS Configuration
- Launch and Startup Options
- Modist Server Selection
- Fast Server
- Automatic Troubleshooting
Privacy and security
VyprVPN does a good job of protecting your privacy. It is based in Switzerland and, as you may be aware, has some of the best privacy laws in the world.
Further, the VyprVPN was one of the very first VPNs to be audited, independently on its no logs policy by a large external global auditing firm.
To date, as of the writing of this review, there has been no privacy or data leak of any kind since VyprVPN inception.
VyprVPN has high-end encryption at similar levels to that of the industry-leading top 3, while providing DNS leak protection, a state of the art kill switch and a cloud VPN service too.
The Cameleon Protocol is VyprVPN’s proprietary technology that defeats VPN blocking and government censorship.
Looking back, this is a feat in itself, and many other VPN providers have tried and failed.
Their biggest calling card, ‘Ace up their sleeve’ for all intents and purposes. It will allow you to pass through countries like China and Russia while avoiding governmental censorship and high-end digital penetration – and is possibly the best service available on the market today.
Performance and Speed
VyprVPN has 700 servers across 70 countries, and this may not seem like a lot compared to some of the competitors, but this begs the question?
How much is enough? At the end of the day, for the average user, you will quickly end up paying for servers you may never need.
After spending weeks running VyprVPN, I feel they have found the balance. Still, more importantly, they have struck lucky on the flop as they own all their own servers, so no third parties are involved and mean, there is little risk of downtime, more control and better security.
From a speed aspect, they are not the fastest and are about 20% off the benchmark against the current leader in this segment, but once again, I did not come close to requiring this extra capacity.
But… and it’s a small one if you are looking for an ultra-fast VPN you will have to pay the price for it. This is the very reason why I like VyprVPN.
They provide you with the service you need and will most likely use without paying for bragging rights and bells and whistles you will never need.
Streaming & torrenting
VyprVPN performance on streaming and unblocking content is surprisingly fast and works across Netflix, Hulu, Disney, Prime, Iplayer and fire TV.
I tested it across four libraries, including the UK, US, the Netherlands and Japan and used it over the holiday period in two European countries and the UK without noticing any defiance in performance.
They allow torrenting across all ports I tested and offered P2P connections, unlike most VPNs keeping you anonymous.
During this test, I simulated a DNS leak, a wifi disturbance, and an unauthorized entry or ‘hack’ on my firewall, and the Kill Switch worked every time.
VyprVPN works across Windows, Mac OS, android and iOS, most new smart TVs (2022 4K LG and 2021 Samsung 4k were tested), all routers post 2020, including the new TP-link with wifi six protocol.
Amazon’s Fire TV was relatively easy to set up once reading through the FaQ, they don’t have a Linux app, but that will only affect around 12% of all users.
Unfortunately, one thing I would like to see is a browser extension, but there are rumours that this may be coming soon.
Price and Payment Methods
They currently offer three plan options with savings across each tier depending on the upfront purchase time period.
Now in the past, I have always cautioned against signing up for anything longer than 1 years plan when it comes to a VPN.
However, as VyprVPN has been around for so long, d touching on my first point in this review, I would be happy to take on this risk for that massive saving on a 36-month deal.
As all plans offer the same service and features, once again providing you with room to grow into your VPN as some of the features you may not use now, you certainly may in the future as you become more accustomed to the product.
Unfortunately, VyprVPN does not accept bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies.
You can only pay using a credit card or PayPal – this, I feel this is a personal requirement to some and can be seen as privacy over the site.
Still, I think that most of us are not pretending to be 007 in casino royale, and most digital banks today will give you the option of a virtual card that can provide some privacy if required.
VyprVPN offers email support, yet they also provide 24/7 chat support and is usually the fastest route to any challenge that I had, which for the record, were few and far between.
There is also a FAQ section with many guides and tutorials if you are into that kind of thing.
VyprVPN Review Conclusion
VyprVPN will serve 80% of the market, and yes, it may not work on Linux or have Onion over VPN and thousands of servers, but these are not the requirements of the larger market, and why should one pay for features you will most likely never use, so for 2022 I am putting my money on VyprVPN.
